We started 8 years ago working on the garden, originally as a hobby, planting and growing what the family needed and wanted to eat.
The first few years were with no real understanding of what we were doing. Every year we learnt more and began to accumulate knowledge.
Soil enrichment, providing shade, learning how to grow from seed; each step would get absorbed into the next year's work and we hit a point at a much better understanding of what we needed and our experimentations were more frequently fruitful.
By 2019, work with shade and soil enrichment essentially created an environment which is more tropical than typical Guanacaste and this created major improvements.
The dry season of 2019 was the first dry season we had where we were able to maintain the nature's helpers such as earth worms in the soil etc
And providing shade experiments really worked well allowing us to get through the brutal 6 month dry season in a more tropical version of a garden.
Friends and people in the area started asking if we would share the garden let them come and see it and for us to explain what we had done and how this might apply to them.
The rainy season this year of 2020 was so good, things planted 4 and 5 years ago are actually starting to provide fruit and we are confident it's a very worthwhile 1 hour 30 minute experience both for tourists and people that live locally
We have over 80 fruit trees and other edible plants
and we are beginning to experiment more in herbs, spices and ground covers within the garden.
Mission
Our primary goal is to provide visitors and locals with a basic introduction to tropical fruits, both common and exotic! We hope to inspire and help our guests to learn more about tropical fruits and even start and maintain their own tropical garden in the future! That said, the basics skills needed to successfully grow exotic tropical fruit trees do apply to cold climate fruit trees, with modifications!
For all of you first time visitors to Costa Rica we also hope to inspire you to visit other parts of our beautiful country on your future trips! We will be building a list of other wonderful gardens and places to visit throughout Costa Rica for your pleasure!
We are beginning to plan workshops and classes for local residents to help you improve your skills to plant and grow fruit trees better at home!
